“We are already in a second wave,” said Susanne Johna, stressing that there is a risk that, due to the desire to return to normality and put an end to the containment measures, the success that Germany has achieved so far will be undermined.

The head of the union asks German citizens to continue to respect measures of distance and social hygiene, as well as the continued use of masks.

Susanne Johna also explained in this interview that hospitals are prepared and that they provide intensive care beds for patients with Covid-19 in a phased manner, while gradually reducing the number of admissions expected in normal wards.

There are almost 21,000 intensive care beds in Germany, of which about 12,200 are free. On Monday, there were 270 patients in intensive care for Covid-19, 130 of whom needed ventilation.
