PJ prevents terrorist attack at the University of Lisbon

The Judiciary Police detained this Thursday in the Oliviais, in Lisbon, an 18-year-old on suspicion of planning a “terrorist” attack that would carry out on Friday. The target was the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.

The suspect had in his possession prohibited weapons and “other articles susceptible of being used in the practice of violent crimes”. In a statement, the PJ also informs that a written plan with details of the attack was seized.

“The investigation was triggered by suspicions of an attack directed at university students at the University of Lisbon”, reads the statement.

According to CNN, the suspect, an engineering student, intended to kill as many of his colleagues as possible. The information will have been transmitted to the PJ by the FBI and the attack would be prepared for this Friday.

Among the material seized in the searches of the young man’s house in Lisbon, there were no firearms. According to the DN, however, there were machetes, crossbows, other bladed weapons, and gas canisters.

The young man was arrested in flagrante delicto, in possession of the weapons, and will be presented to the judge on Friday to know the coercive measures. He is indicted for the crime of terrorism.
