The Russian president has already signed decrees that recognize the so far breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in Ukraine as People’s Republics.
The decision was made official today at a ceremony broadcast on state television. Putin also urged the parliament to sign the treaties that will allow Moscow’s military support to these self-proclaimed republics.
“I consider it necessary to take this decision, which has been planned for a long time, to immediately recognize the independence of the People’s Republic of Donetsk and the People’s Republic of Lugansk”, said the Russian head of state.
Putin also asked the Russian parliament to “approve this decision” and then “ratify the friendship and mutual aid agreements with these republics”, which will allow Moscow, for example, to send military support to the two pro-Russian territories. of the Ukrainian Donbass.
In his speech, the president further concluded: “In announcing the decisions taken today, I am confident in the support of the citizens of Russia and all patriotic forces in the country.”
Vladimir Putin had already announced hours earlier that he would decide today on recognizing the independence of the pro-Russian breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine, despite threats of retaliation from Western countries if the Russian president made such a decision.
This decision could lead the European Union to take action. Remember that Josep Borrell had already mentioned this in his speech this afternoon.
“If there is annexation, there will be sanctions, and if there is recognition [of independence], I will put sanctions on the table of European ministers,” said the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy.
