Putin Orders Russian Army “Peace Keeping” in Separatist Regions

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the deployment of the Russian army for “peacekeeping” in pro-Russian separatist territories in eastern Ukraine, which he recognized today as independent.

Putin signed two decrees calling on the Defense Ministry for “the Russian Armed Forces [to assume] the functions of maintaining peace in the territory” of the “people’s republics” of Donetsk and Lugansk, according to AFP.

Russian President Vladimir Putin today recognized the independence of pro-Russian separatist territories in eastern Ukraine, with which he signed treaties of friendship and mutual assistance with the leaders of Donetsk, Denis Pushilin, and Lugansk, Leonid Pásechnik.
