Russian attack on Kyiv TV tower stops broadcasting

A Russian attack today targeted a television tower in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, causing broadcast channels to be interrupted, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry announced.

The attack, which takes place on the sixth day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, “hit” equipment in the tower, located near an important memorial to victims of the Holocaust, the ministry said, quoted by Agence France-Presse.

“The channels will not work for a certain time”, but the “security” systems will allow some TV channels to resume broadcasting soon, he added.

A photograph released by the Ministry of the Interior showed the tower shrouded in a thick cloud of gray smoke.

The main structure of the building, however, was still standing.

The television tower is located in the same neighborhood as the site of Babi Yar, a ravine where the Nazis killed over 30,000 Jews in two days in 1941. This area is now an important place of memory.

“These barbarians are massacring the victims of the Holocaust for the second time,” said the head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, Andriï Iermak, on Twitter.
