Seven soldiers died yesterday in a helicopter crash in Romania, on the outskirts of the Black Sea, while searching for a fighter plane whose pilot is still missing. The fighter had taken off at 20:00 local time from the Mihail Kogalniceanu base in southeastern Romania, where 1,000 American troops were sent in February to consolidate NATO’s eastern flank due to tensions with Russia.
“The five crew members of the helicopter lost their lives. Operations to find the pilot of the MiG-21 LanceR [plane] continue”, declared on television General Constantin Spanu, spokesman for the Ministry of Defense.
