The Atlantic Alliance has warned the West of the need to prepare for a long-term conflict. In an interview with the BBC, NATO Deputy Secretary-General Mircea Geoană says that war can last for years. Also, the secretary-general of the organization, Jens Stoltenberg, said this Thursday, during a meeting of young people in Brussels, that there is a possibility that the war in Ukraine drags on “for months and years”.

However, the NATO official assures that the Alliance is ready to maintain its support for Ukraine in the war against Russia during, including helping Kiev switch from Soviet-era weaponry to modern Western weapons and systems.

Stoltenberg said the West would continue to put maximum pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the invasion of Ukraine through sanctions and economic and military aid to Kiev.

“NATO allies are preparing to provide support over a long period of time and also help Ukraine transition from old Soviet-era equipment to more modern NATO weapons and systems,” Stoltenberg said.
