Patron, a Jack Russell terrier, was honored by the president of Ukraine at a ceremony in Kyiv. The two-year-old dog has been known to help find more than 200 explosive devices since the start of the Russian invasion.
Patron, which means “ammunition” in Ukrainian, is Ukraine’s new four-legged hero. The two-year-old Jack Russell terrier has become a national star for helping mine and trap technicians find over 200 Russian explosive devices.
This Sunday, the dog was honored in Kyiv by President Zelensky for his services during the war. “I want to honor all our heroes, including the wonderful little ‘soldier’ Patron, who helps not only to detect explosives but also to teach our children the necessary safety rules in areas where there are threats of mines,” said the president during the ceremony.
While visiting the country, Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, attended the conference, announcing that Canada will send more weapons and equipment to Ukraine. During the presentation of the medals to Patron and his owner, Myhailo Iliev, the prime minister, Trudeau, patted his pockets as if looking for cookies for the dog.
Patron has become a focal point of Ukrainian patriotism and regularly appears in videos on official Ukrainian media channels. The “big dog” is a star on social media and has over 100,000 followers on Instagram and over 10,000 followers on Twitter.
