The president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has died, according to the state news agency WAM, this Friday. The ruler was 73 years old.

“The Ministry of Presidential Affairs announced that there will be 40 days of official mourning with flags at half-mast and three days of closed ministries, as well as official entities in all states and the private sector,” the agency wrote on Twitter.

The ruler had been ill for several years and no longer involved in day-to-day affairs, a task that fell to his brother, Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed, who is now seen as the country’s ruler. There is still no announcement about the successor.

Sheikh Nahyan was born in 1948, and was chosen in 2004 to succeed his father Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan.
