“The best thing for the security of the Swedish people is to join NATO”, says Prime Minister

The prime minister of Sweden considered this Sunday that the country’s security needs are better served by remaining in NATO. Magdalena Andersson was speaking after her Social Democratic Party approved joining the military alliance following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“The best thing for the security of Sweden and the Swedish people is to join NATO,” Andersson said at a press conference. “We believe that Sweden needs the formal security guarantees that come with joining NATO,” added the Swedish government leader.

The Swedish Social Democratic Party announced this Sunday that it approves the country’s entry into NATO, changing its historic position in relation to the military alliance, following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, creating a large majority in Parliament in favor of joining that organization.

Finland confirmed this Sunday that it will apply to be a member of NATO and now the Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson is more certain about the presentation of a formal candidacy in the coming days.
