AFTER MASSACRES IN US, CANADA CREATES TOUGHEST LEGISLATION AGAINST GUNS

The carrying of weapons is allowed in the country, however, the initiative intends to increase its restrictions.

The government of Canada, where the possession of firearms is legal, has recently started the process of passing legislation imposing stricter controls on the population’s weapons.

The initiative put a freeze on the sale of objects: “We are limiting the number of revolvers in this country. It will be illegal to buy, sell, transfer or import firearms anywhere in Canada.”

It is important to note that the project comes after two bloody shootings took place in the United States, a neighboring country.

The massacre in the city of Buffalo, US state of New York, which targeted black people inside a supermarket, as well as the recent attack on an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, had gun violence as a common point.

Military technology in the hands of civilians
In addition to the new measures, Canadian authorities also aim to ban 1,500 types of military-style weapons by the end of 2022. This group includes, for example, the AR-15, an assault rifle used by the teenager who carried out the Uvelde massacre, taking 21 lives.

“Other than using firearms for sport shooting and hunting, there is no reason why anyone in Canada would need guns in their everyday lives,” Trudeau said, according to The Guardian.

The politician even addressed the argument of personal freedom, which, for some, would be hurt when a government makes it difficult to arm its population:

We need less gun violence. We cannot let the gun debate become so polarized that nothing is done. We cannot let this happen in our country. This is about freedom. People should be free to go to the supermarket, school or place of worship without fear,” concluded the prime minister.
