War in Ukraine was ‘chosen by one man’, accuses Biden

The US president accused Russia of “shamelessly” violating the UN charter, considering that the conflict in Ukraine was “chosen by one man”.

Before the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), US President Joe Biden began by highlighting the “great revolutions” of the last year, including the “growing food crisis”, as well as “in security and in energy”, also mentioning phenomena such as “floods, heat, Covid-19, and inflation”, and, finally, “a brutal, unwanted, unnecessary war, chosen by a man”.

“Let’s put it as it is. A permanent member of the UN Security Council has invaded his neighbor, trying to erase a sovereign state from the map. Russia has shamelessly violated the UN charter. There is a clear prohibition that countries take over the neighbor’s territory by force”, began by launching the head of state, stressing that, “today, President Putin made more nuclear threats against Europe, disregarding the responsibilities of a non-proliferation regime”.

The US president also recalled that Russia has started a process of mobilizing more soldiers to the front line, while the Kremlin organizes “fictitious referendums to withdraw territory from Ukraine, in very significant violation of the UN charter”.

“Putin says he acted because there was a threat to Russia, but no one threatened Russia. And no one other than Russia sought a conflict. In fact, we had warned that this would happen, and we worked with many to prevent it. Putin’s own words leave no room for doubt: before the invasion, he said, and I quote, that ‘Ukraine was created by Russia, and it never had a true state status’, he pointed out.

“A nuclear war cannot be won and can never be fought,” he added.

Biden did not fail to mention the attacks on Ukraine’s schools, hospitals, and institutions, which represent “further evidence of the horrific war crimes committed by Russia”.

Thus, in his view, “this war aims to extinguish Ukraine’s right to exist as a state”, regardless of his beliefs.

“This should make your blood run cold. That is why 141 nations in the General Assembly came together to condemn, without any doubt, this war by Russia against Ukraine”, he listed, recalling the “massive aid” of the United States to that invaded country, who says they are working on implementing more sanctions and holding Russia accountable for the attacks committed.

“If nations can pursue their territorial ambitions without consequences, we jeopardize everything that this same institution stands for. Everything!”, he underlined, reinforcing, once again, that the United States is “on the side of Ukraine”, wishing that “this war ends on fair terms” and defended by all.

“You can’t take a nation’s territory by force. The only country that stands in the way of this is Russia. That’s why everyone here is determined to uphold the principles we believe in, and which we promise to uphold, as members of the UN. We must be clear, firm, and resolute in our decision. Ukraine has the same rights as any sovereign nation”, he said, noting that the United States remains determined to defend democracy not only on its territory but all around the world.

“Democracy is humanity’s instrument to defend the challenges of our times”, he concluded.
