Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) was the fastest in qualifying (Q3) of the United States Grand Prix and will start from the first position of the starting grid for this Sunday’s race (20:00, mainland Portugal), at the Circuit of the Americas, in Austin.

The Spaniard took the third pole position of his career, all this season, after having obtained it in Great Britain and Belgium, and prevailed on the Texas track, by just 65 milliseconds (1.34.356 minutes). ), to teammate in the Italian team, Charles Leclerc. However, the Monegasque driver will not occupy the corresponding second position in the starting line-up in the race, due to the penalty of ten positions (he will start from 12th) for having installed in his single-seater the sixth of only three combustion engines allowed per season and still the sixth of three regulatory turbochargers.

Fernando Alonso (Alpine) loses five places for having stayed for the replacement of the engine, for a sanction identical to those that had been imposed on Sergio Perez (Red Bull) and Guanyu Zhou (Alfa Romeo), for the same reason, still on Friday .

Due to these drops, Max Verstappen (Red Bull, +0.092 s), already crowned (two) world champion, moves up one grid position and will start from the front row, alongside Carlos Sainz. Also promoted one place by the retreat of Sergio Perez (3rd, +0.289 s), Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes, + 0.591 s) will come out of third place, in line with the other Mercedes, by George Russell (+ 0.632 s).
