A mobile phone, computer or tablet connected to the internet and an account. It is what is necessary for a Ukrainian military to have access to a “comprehensive view of the battlefield” with detailed data on the weaponry and positioning of the adversary. All this is possible thanks to the work of the non-governmental organization Aerorozvidka, which developed the command and control system known as Delta. “It allows you to see all the enemy’s data on a screen”, reveals a source from the NGO to the Observer.

Radars, intercepted radio messages, satellite images, field videos, sensors, and even information provided by NATO member states. To compile this wealth of information, Delta uses numerous sources. Then, the system interprets the data and transfers it to a map with intuitive and easy-to-understand signs.

Conceived in 2014, at a time when a conflict centered on eastern Ukraine was developing, the Delta had to expand to cover the entirety of Ukrainian territory after the invasion by Vladimir Putin’s troops. But it wasn’t until February 22nd — two days before the war started — that the system was fully operational. “The universe was telling us something”, acknowledged to the DOU portal, in May, Artem Martynenko, one of those responsible for developing the program.
