On the first day of the three-day G7 Leaders Summit in Hiroshima, Japan, a joint statement regarding Ukraine was issued by the leaders of the G7 countries. The statement, signed after a roundtable meeting with the participation of leaders such as US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, strongly condemned Russia’s attempted invasion of Ukraine.

The statement highlighted the devastating consequences of Russia’s aggression, including loss of life, suffering among the Ukrainian people, and the threat to access food and energy for vulnerable populations. The G7 leaders expressed their unwavering commitment to mitigating the impact of Russia’s illegal actions on the global stage and reiterated their support for Ukraine.

In their joint statement, the leaders announced the implementation of new measures to ensure the failure of Russia’s illegal aggression and to support the Ukrainian people in their pursuit of a just peace based on respect for international law. This includes the agreement to impose further sanctions on Russia and its supporters.

The leaders also emphasized their determination to prevent Russia from using energy as a weapon and called for the immediate, complete, and unconditional withdrawal of Russian troops and military equipment from Ukrainian territory, which is internationally recognized.

Addressing Russia’s nuclear weapons policies and its intention to deploy them in Belarus, the statement described them as dangerous and unacceptable. The G7 countries affirmed their commitment to provide ongoing security support to Ukraine and pledged to tailor this support according to Ukraine’s specific needs.

The joint statement highlighted the commitment to maintaining coordinated sanctions in order to deter Russia from persisting with its illegal aggression. As part of these efforts, new measures will be implemented, such as export restrictions on technological devices, including industrial machinery, and trade restrictions on key sectors like manufacturing, construction, and transportation.

The statement underlined the determination to continue reducing Russia’s energy revenues. It also expressed the intent to actively pursue tangible actions to achieve a comprehensive, fair, and enduring peace in Ukraine. The leaders emphasized the importance of working towards a resolution that addresses the root causes of the conflict and ensures the well-being of the Ukrainian people.
