Authorities in Venice are currently conducting an investigation into the origin of a patch of phosphorescent green liquid that emerged on Sunday (Monday NZT) in the renowned Grand Canal of the city.

Luca Zaia, the governor of the Veneto region, shared a photograph depicting the green liquid that had spread in the water near the iconic Rialto Bridge. The patch of green liquid was initially reported by local residents.

Images circulating on social media platforms reveal a vivid and distinct patch of green coloration in the canal, running alongside an embankment adorned with restaurants.

Governor Luca Zaia stated that officials have requested a police investigation to identify the responsible party. Environmental authorities are also conducting water testing.

According to the BBC, one theory suggests that the green appearance could be a deliberate act coinciding with the Volgalonga regatta scheduled for the weekend.

It is worth noting that in 1968, artist Nicolás García Uriburu dyed the waters of the canal as a means of raising awareness about environmental concerns.
