In response to concerns about the impact of the Ukraine war on Armenia’s relations with other countries, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan emphasized that Armenia is not aligned as a Russian ally in the conflict.
The cautious response from Moscow comes as Armenia, a small former Soviet nation located in the southern Caucasus region, maintains strong security and economic ties with Russia.
These ties have been further solidified due to the longstanding dispute with neighboring Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh territory.
Armenia, as a member of the Moscow-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) military alliance, stands apart from Azerbaijan, which is not part of this alliance.
In an interview with CNN Prima News, Prime Minister Pashinyan expressed that Armenia is not aligned as an ally of Russia in the Ukraine conflict.
However, he shared concerns about the impact of the war on Armenia’s relationships with various countries, causing anxiety for Armenia, as it finds itself caught between both sides.
Pashinyan highlighted the contrasting perceptions, where the West acknowledges Armenia as a Russian ally, while Russia recognizes that Armenia does not align with them in the Ukraine war.
Consequently, Armenia finds itself in a vulnerable position, lacking alliances in this situation.
In 2020, Azerbaijan regained control over portions of territory that had been lost during the conflict that followed the collapse of Soviet rule in the early 1990s.
