Overnight, a series of tornadoes ripped through Mississippi, resulting in one fatality and leaving nearly two dozen people injured, according to officials.
The storms brought not only tornadoes but also high temperatures and hail in some areas, intensifying the destructive impact.
The town of Louin bore the brunt of the damage, with drone footage and images revealing vast areas covered in debris, demolished homes, and uprooted trees.
The victim, 67-year-old George Jean Hayes, tragically lost her life, suffering from severe injuries. Residents described the terrifying speed at which the tornadoes struck, likening it to the sound of a roaring train.
Emergency responders swiftly attended to the injured, transporting them to medical facilities for treatment. The unusual timing of the tornadoes, occurring in June rather than the typical early to mid-spring season, caught meteorologists by surprise.
The affected areas are now grappling with power outages and extensive property damage. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves has initiated search and rescue missions, deployed drones for assessment, and established command centers and shelters to assist those affected by the severe weather.
The community faces a challenging road to recovery, with numerous homes completely destroyed.
