Despite the roof being deployed, the match between Novak Djokovic and Pedro Cachin faced a delay of nearly an hour and a half due to a damp court, leading to concerns regarding the Centre Court roof at Wimbledon.
Djokovic, the four-time defending champion, eventually won the match 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
However, the match was disrupted after the first set as officials waited until the set ended to cover the court. Djokovic expressed dissatisfaction with the surface and, along with Cachin and the referee, inspected the court.
Play resumed under the roof on Court One, but Djokovic remained cautious, given his previous remarks about the challenges of playing on grass.
Eventually, the roof was opened again when the skies cleared, rendering its use unnecessary.
Djokovic and officials communicated about the situation, and the Serbian player expressed hope that the issue with the court would be addressed, considering that Centre Court is one of the only two courts with a roof.
The delay impacted Djokovic’s ideal start to his quest for a record-equalling 24th grand slam singles title and eighth Wimbledon crown.
Despite the interruption, he performed well, winning the match in three sets.
Djokovic’s unbeaten streak on Centre Court since 2013 continued, and he acknowledged the solid performance while looking to elevate his level as the tournament progresses.
