According to the air defense forces of Kyiv, Russia initiated a devastating assault on the city of Lviv in western Ukraine using Kalibr cruise missiles. Tragically, four individuals lost their lives, and 34 others suffered injuries in the strikes, as confirmed by Lviv Governor Maksym Kozytskyy. Lviv is situated a mere 80 kilometers away from the Ukrainian border with Poland.

Despite Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepting seven cruise missiles, three missiles managed to penetrate and cause extensive damage to the city, including its residential areas and the local polytechnic university. The impact of the attack has been particularly severe since Lviv had become a refuge for thousands of displaced individuals from other war-affected cities and towns across Ukraine.

The Russian attack was launched from the Black Sea, as stated by the Ukrainian Air Forces. They revealed that the Kalibr cruise missiles were launched from both surface carriers and submarines. The missiles initially traveled in a northern direction, utilizing the topography of the area and following the course of the Dnipro River. However, they abruptly changed their trajectory to the west, intensifying the scale of the devastation inflicted upon Lviv.

The assault on Lviv represents one of the most significant attacks on its civilian infrastructure since the start of the full-scale invasion, according to Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi. The destruction is so extensive in the residential sector that many locals have been displaced from their homes.

The consequences of this missile attack underscore the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine, further amplifying the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to prevent further loss of life and destruction.
