Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was hospitalized on Saturday after experiencing dizziness and dehydration.
The 73-year-old leader was admitted to Sheba Hospital, close to his private residence, and is expected to stay overnight.
Netanyahu’s office said he was on holiday at the Sea of Galilee on Friday when he started to feel unwell. He was taken to the hospital after experiencing light dizziness.
In a video from the hospital, Netanyahu said he was feeling well and thanked his supporters for their concern. He also urged people to stay hydrated during the heat wave.
Netanyahu’s hospitalization comes at a time of political turmoil in Israel. He is facing protests against his religious-nationalist coalition’s push for judicial reform.
The reform plan has been criticized by some as an attempt to curb court independence. Netanyahu has denied the allegations, saying the reforms would balance out the branches of government.
Netanyahu’s office said the weekly Cabinet meeting, which was scheduled for Sunday, would be postponed until Monday.
The White House National Security Council said it wished Netanyahu a speedy recovery.
This is not the first time Netanyahu has been hospitalized for health reasons. In early October, he was taken ill during the Jewish fast of Yom Kippur and was also briefly hospitalized.
Netanyahu has been a controversial figure throughout his time in office. He has been both praised for his economic policies and criticized for his handling of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
However, he remains a popular figure among many Israelis. He is the longest-serving prime minister in Israeli history.
We wish Netanyahu a speedy recovery.
