Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been released from the hospital following an overnight stay for medical check-ups and monitoring after experiencing dizziness.
After feeling mild dizziness, Mr. Netanyahu, 73, was urgently taken to Sheba Medical Centre on Saturday. His office stated that he left the hospital around midday as his test results came back normal and he was feeling “very good.”
Following a series of tests, including cardiovascular examinations, the medical center reported that Mr. Netanyahu was in an “excellent” condition.
According to his office, the Israeli leader had spent the previous day at the Sea of Galilee, a popular vacation destination in northern Israel, where temperatures reached approximately 40 degrees Celsius during a country-wide heatwave.
Based on initial assessments, dehydration was determined to be the cause of the veteran leader’s hospitalization.
Mr. Netanyahu took to social media in a video message after being admitted, explaining that he had been in the sun on Friday without a hat and water, emphasizing that it was “not a good idea.”
Doctors advised him to remain in the hospital overnight for further observation, resulting in the delay of his weekly cabinet meeting, which was rescheduled for Monday, as per his office’s statement.
With multiple terms spanning over 15 years in office, Mr. Netanyahu is Israel’s longest-serving leader. His current government, consisting of religious and ultranationalist parties, came into power in December.
While generally in good health, Mr. Netanyahu experienced a brief hospitalization in October after feeling unwell during prayers on Yom Kippur, a day observed by fasting for religious Jews.
The Israeli leader faces various pressures, including his ongoing trial for multiple corruption charges, which has deeply divided the nation. Additionally, his government’s hard-line policies towards Palestinians have drawn international criticism and strained relations with the United States, Israel’s closest and most significant ally.
Domestically, tens of thousands of Israelis have been participating in weekly demonstrations against Mr. Netanyahu’s government to protest his plans to reform the country’s judiciary. His allies argue that the plan is necessary to curb the authority of unelected judges, while opponents claim it will undermine the nation’s delicate system of checks and balances, concentrating power in the hands of Mr. Netanyahu and his allies.
