WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden has granted CIA Director William Burns Cabinet status, a move that carries symbolic significance and highlights the intelligence chief’s influential role in shaping U.S. support for Ukraine.

Biden, in an official statement, lauded Burns for leveraging intelligence to provide a crucial strategic advantage to the nation, emphasizing his straightforward and clear analysis that prioritizes the safety and security of the American people.

Throughout the Biden administration, Burns has played a central role, particularly in the White House’s efforts to declassify intelligence reports indicating Russia’s intentions to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. As a seasoned diplomat and former ambassador to Russia, Burns was dispatched to Moscow several months before the conflict to alert Russian President Vladimir Putin of the U.S. assessment.

Over the course of nearly 18 months since Putin’s invasion, the U.S. has extended intelligence support to Ukraine, including the provision of weapons and ammunition. Burns has made numerous visits to Kyiv, meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Additionally, in November 2022, he was sent to warn Russia against the use of nuclear weapons in the ongoing conflict.

Burns maintains a close working relationship with President Biden, frequently providing direct briefings on Ukraine and other global matters. As a member of the Cabinet, Burns will collaborate with Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, whose office sets the direction for the CIA and other entities within the U.S. intelligence community.

Burns expressed his gratitude for the recognition, acknowledging the essential contributions the Central Intelligence Agency makes to national security daily. He affirmed his honor in representing the exceptional work of intelligence officers.

It is worth noting that not all administrations have included top intelligence officials in their Cabinets. Former President Donald Trump’s Cabinet, for instance, featured the directors of national intelligence and CIA directors without Cabinet status.
