Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has said that he believes the UK will eventually return to the European Union. In an interview with The Guardian, Blair said that Brexit has been a “disaster” for the UK and that the country is now “less influential” on the world stage. He argued that the UK would be better off rejoining the EU, which he said would give the country “more power and influence”.
Blair’s comments come as a majority of Britons now say that they would vote to rejoin the EU if there was a second referendum. A recent poll by YouGov found that 51% of Britons would vote to rejoin the EU, while 36% would vote to stay out.
“I believe that the UK will eventually return to the EU,” Blair said. “Brexit has been a disaster for our country. We are now less influential on the world stage and we have lost access to the single market, which has damaged our economy. I believe that the UK would be better off rejoining the EU.”
The government has said that it has no plans to rejoin the EU, but Blair has argued that the UK’s position on the EU could change in the future. He said that the UK would need to “prove itself to be a successful nation” after Brexit if it wanted to rejoin the EU.
“The UK needs to show that it can be a successful country outside of the EU,” Blair said. “If we can do that, then I believe that the British people will eventually come to the conclusion that we are better off rejoining the EU.”
Only time will tell whether Blair is right and the UK will eventually return to the EU. However, his comments suggest that there is growing support for rejoining the EU among the British public.
What do you think? Should the UK rejoin the EU?
