Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has issued a warning about a potential “hybrid attack” on Polish territory by a group of Wagner mercenaries in Belarus. According to Morawiecki, over 100 mercenaries have moved close to the Polish border, near the Suwałki Gap, which separates Belarus from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. The concern is that these mercenaries may pose as illegal migrants to enter Poland and destabilize the country.

Speaking at a press conference in southern Poland, Morawiecki expressed that the Wagner members could disguise themselves as Belarusian border guards and assist illegal immigrants in crossing into Polish territory. He stated that the situation has become increasingly dangerous, and the mercenaries may attempt to infiltrate Poland pretending to be illegal immigrants.

The Wagner troops reportedly moved to Belarus from Russia as part of a deal to end the group’s 24-hour rebellion against Moscow. Previously, Warsaw and Brussels accused the Belarusian government and its Russian backers of transporting migrants to the Polish border to sow instability at the edge of the EU.

In response to the escalating situation, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine visited front-line troops in the Bakhmut area and met with military commanders. The UK’s Ministry of Defense also confirmed an “uptick of fighting” in two sectors in the south of Ukraine, with the capture of the village of Staromaiorske in the Donetsk region and fighting focused on the village of Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region.

The situation remains tense as the Polish government and other countries in the region closely monitor developments and prepare for potential security threats.
