Russian authorities reported that three Ukrainian drones launched an attack on Moscow during the early hours of Sunday, causing injury to one person and leading to a temporary closure of one of the airports surrounding the Russian capital.
This marked the fourth attempted strike on the capital region in the past month and the third one this week, raising concerns about Moscow’s vulnerability to attacks as Russia’s conflict in Ukraine continues into its 18th month.
The Russian Defense Ministry referred to the incident as an “attempted terrorist attack by the Kyiv regime,” stating that three drones were involved in targeting the city. In response, air defense systems shot down one drone in the surrounding Moscow region, while the other two were successfully jammed.
Unfortunately, the two jammed drones ended up crashing into the Moscow City business district, resulting in damage to the facade of a skyscraper on one floor.
Despite the severity of the attack, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that the damage was relatively minor, only “insignificantly damaging” the exterior of two buildings in the Moscow City district.
In the aftermath of the strike, one security guard was injured, as reported by Russia’s state news agency Tass, citing emergency officials.
The incident has added to the growing concerns about Moscow’s security and has underscored the need for increased vigilance as Russia’s conflict with Ukraine persists. Authorities are closely monitoring such attacks to ensure the safety and protection of the city and its residents.
