Kyiv Rejects ‘Ridiculous’ Notion of Territory Trade for NATO Membership Amid Alliance Official’s Proposal

Kyiv has swiftly dismissed the notion proposed by a NATO official that Ukraine should consider trading territory to Russia in exchange for NATO membership. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the head of the Ukrainian President’s Office, called the idea “ridiculous” and cautioned against sacrificing democracy and international law for short-term gains.

Podolyak criticized the suggestion, stating that such a move would embolden Russia’s aggressive behavior and leave the door open for further conflict. He emphasized that without holding Russian leaders accountable and achieving significant change within the country, any attempt to appease Putin’s regime would only lead to dishonor and prolonged conflict.

This response comes after NATO Chief of Staff, Stian Jenssen, floated the idea that Ukraine could potentially gain NATO membership if it were to cede territory to Russia as part of a peace settlement. While the concept has been put forth, Ukraine’s swift rejection underscores the complexity and sensitivity of such a proposal in the midst of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
