A court in Pakistan has temporarily suspended the corruption conviction and three-year prison sentence of the nation’s former Prime Minister, Imran Khan.

An appeals court in Pakistan has granted a suspension of the sentence imposed on former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was recently convicted on a corruption charge and subsequently imprisoned.

“The sentence has been temporarily suspended, for which we are grateful,” stated Naeem Haider, Imran Khan’s legal representative, on the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter.

Furthermore, the Islamabad High Court has granted bail to Khan. However, the immediate release of Khan is uncertain due to the presence of several other charges against him.

This decision comes a few weeks following Khan’s conviction and a subsequent three-year prison sentence imposed by another court. The initial conviction found him guilty of concealing assets acquired through the sale of state gifts he had received during his time in office.

The conviction centered around Khan’s failure to declare these gifts and subsequently transfer them to Toshakhana, a repository for state gifts from foreign officials to Pakistani government representatives.

Notably, Imran Khan was removed from his prime ministerial position through a no-confidence vote in the parliamentary proceedings held last year.
