Military leaders behind the Gabonese coup have designated General Brice Oligui Nguema

The declaration emerged mere hours subsequent to military officials revealed on national television that they had assumed authority, confining President Bongo to his residence.

In the aftermath of the election, military leaders behind the Gabonese coup have designated General Brice Oligui Nguema, the head of the Republican Guard, as the transitional president. This announcement was conveyed via a televised statement and marked a significant development following the military’s takeover.

An official in the presence of numerous senior officers read out the press release on Gabon 24, affirming, “General Oligui Nguema Brice has been unanimously selected as the head of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions and as the head of the transitional body.”

If the coup proves successful, it would be the eighth of its kind in West and Central Africa since 2020, effectively ending the Bongo family’s 56-year tenure in power. The military officers invalidated the results of the recent election, including Bongo’s claimed victory, thus laying the foundation for their intervention.

Seeking Assistance from the Global Community

Detained Gabonese President Ali Bongo, purportedly held under house arrest, released a video message on Wednesday urging the international community to rally support for him and his family. The video, widely disseminated online, was confirmed to be authentic by BTP Advisors, a PR firm closely associated with Bongo’s election campaign.

In the video, Bongo stated, “I and my family have been apprehended. My son is in one location, my wife is in another… Presently, I’m at my residence and there’s no activity occurring. I’m uncertain about the situation.” He appealed to global allies, urging them to raise their voices in solidarity.

Despite his circumstances, Bongo appeared well-dressed and composed. His plea was delivered in a calm manner, occasionally punctuated by pauses, indicating the urgency of his message.

Earlier, military officials had announced on national television that they had seized control and subjected Bongo to house arrest. The officers also reported the apprehension of his son, Noureddin Bongo Valentin, along with other individuals.
