China has vehemently rejected remarks made by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock during her visit to the United States, where she referred to Chinese President Xi Jinping as a “dictator” during an interview. Beijing expressed its strong dissatisfaction with Baerbock’s comments, deeming them “extremely absurd” and a serious infringement on China’s dignity. Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, labeled Baerbock’s statements as an “open political provocation” and stated that China had made “solemn representations to the German side through diplomatic channels.”

Baerbock’s remarks came during a live interview with Fox News, where she emphasized the German government’s support for Ukraine. When discussing Russia’s war against Ukraine, she stated that Germany would support Ukraine for as long as it takes. Baerbock also expressed concern that a Russian victory in the conflict would send a concerning message to other world leaders, including President Xi of China.

This incident follows previous instances of world leaders using the term “dictator” in reference to President Xi. US President Joe Biden used the term in June, and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken did so during a visit to China shortly after.

Germany, despite being a major trading partner with China, adopted a new policy in July to address its relationship with Beijing, characterizing China as a “partner, competitor, systemic rival.” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has a more trade-friendly stance toward China, while Baerbock, a Green Party member, has been a vocal critic of Beijing, stating that China poses challenges to global norms and values. She has also described aspects of her trip to China as “more than shocking” and highlighted China’s transformation from a trade partner to a systemic rival.
