U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Cohen has officially confirmed that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was apprised of potential Indian involvement in the murder of a Canadian citizen back in June, as reported by CTV News. The information was sourced from shared intelligence within the Five Eyes alliance, which comprises the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Trudeau made a public statement on Monday, asserting that Ottawa possessed credible intelligence linking Indian agents to the assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Vancouver. This revelation drew a strong and denial-laden reaction from New Delhi.

In an interview with CTV News, David Cohen revealed, “I will say this was a matter of shared intelligence information. There was a lot of communication between Canada and the United States about this, and I think that’s as far as I’m comfortable going.”

The Canadian government conducted a comprehensive investigation into the murder, utilizing both human and electronic intelligence sources, according to a separate report by CBC News.

Cohen refrained from specifying the nature of the intelligence that informed the Canadian government’s conclusion.

On Friday, the United States emphasized its expectation that the Indian government cooperates with Canada in investigating the potential involvement of New Delhi agents in Nijjar’s murder. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated during a press briefing, “We are deeply concerned about the allegations that Prime Minister Trudeau has raised. It would be important that India work with the Canadians on this investigation. We want to see accountability.”
