U.S. President Joe Biden has informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the United States’ commitment to supplying a limited number of long-range missiles to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities in the event of a conflict with Russia.
This development was reported by NBC News, citing three U.S. officials and a congressional representative familiar with the discussions. The officials, who were not authorized to disclose details publicly, refrained from specifying the exact timing of the missile delivery or when an official announcement might occur.
The sources referenced by NBC News did not specify the specific type of missile, as the U.S. possesses a diverse arsenal of long-range missiles capable of striking distant targets. There remains an ongoing debate regarding the missile type and the quantity to be provided to Ukraine.
It is noteworthy that several Eastern European countries have already supplied substantial portions of their weapon stockpiles to Ukraine, further enhancing its defensive capabilities. The potential missile shipment to Ukraine could encompass a variety of missile systems, including the previously pledged GLSDB missiles. However, these missiles are not expected to reach Ukraine before the autumn of 2023.
Discussions are also underway regarding the transfer of ATACMS long-range missiles to Ukraine, although a consensus within the United States on this matter has not been reached.
Militarnyi had previously reported that the United States expressed support for a bipartisan resolution, known as H.Res. 488, urging the Biden Administration to furnish Ukraine with ATACMS missiles. This resolution received consideration and approval from the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs. The document underscores the immediate necessity of providing Ukraine with long-range missiles while ensuring the United States’ own combat readiness.
