The most recent pre-election survey conducted by ABC News/Washington Post has unveiled a significant shift in the dynamics of the race for the next President of the United States, scheduled for 2024. Notably, Republican candidate Donald Trump has surged ahead of the incumbent, Joe Biden, in this latest poll.
The survey highlighted several key findings:
Biden’s Approval Ratings: Joe Biden’s approval ratings have seen a sharp decline, plummeting by 19 points since the previous ABC News/Washington Post survey. This decrease extended to his ratings for handling the US economy and immigration issues, indicating a growing dissatisfaction among respondents.
Economic Concerns: A noteworthy finding from the survey is that 44 percent of US nationals expressed that their financial situations have worsened during Joe Biden’s presidency. Only 30 percent approved of his economic performance. When it came to handling immigration at the US-Mexico border, approval dropped even further to a mere 23 percent.
Overall Approval: In terms of overall job approval, only 37 percent of respondents approved of Joe Biden’s work, while a significant 56 percent disapproved.
Age and Eligibility: Concerns about age emerged as 74 percent of respondents believed that Joe Biden is too old for a second term as US President. This sentiment was notably higher than in previous surveys. Interestingly, opinions about Donald Trump’s age also shifted within the survey.
Responsibility for a Government Shutdown: Regarding a potential government shutdown, 40 percent of respondents indicated they would blame the Democrats in the US Congress, while 33 percent would hold the Republicans accountable.
Trump’s Improved Ratings: On the other side of the spectrum, Donald Trump’s approval ratings have shown an improvement. While only 38 percent of US citizens approved of his work when he left office in 2021, that number has now risen to 48 percent. However, it’s essential to note that 49 percent of people still disapprove of his performance as the President of the US.
Biden vs. Trump: Among the 56 percent of Americans who disapprove of Biden’s work in office, a substantial 75 percent of them expressed approval of Trump when looking back. It’s worth mentioning that Donald Trump’s ratings are also evenly split.
Presidential Nominees: In terms of the 2024 Presidential polls, 62 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents believed that their party should choose a different nominee than Biden. The survey showed that 8 percent supported the current Vice President, Kamala Harris, 8 percent supported Bernie Sanders, and 7 percent expressed confidence in Robert F. Kennedy Jr. On the Republican side, 54 percent of the party members and other Republican-leaning independents supported Donald Trump as the nominee.
Head-to-Head Contest: In a hypothetical November 2024 contest between Trump and Biden, Trump led with 51 percent support, while Biden trailed with 42 percent. This marked a numerical gain of three points for Trump and a two-point drop for Biden from a similar poll conducted in February 2023.
While these poll results provide insights into the evolving political landscape, it’s important to recognize that the political climate is dynamic, and public opinion can shift. Therefore, close scrutiny of the changing dynamics in the lead-up to the 2024 Presidential election is essential.
