Two US Army soldiers lost their lives, and 12 others sustained injuries when a military transport vehicle overturned on a dirt road leading to the Yukon Training Area near Salcha, Alaska. The accident occurred on Monday, and it involved a single vehicle carrying 17 soldiers.
The driver of the military transport vehicle reportedly lost control on the dirt road, causing the vehicle to flip. First responders extricated the soldiers from the vehicle and provided on-scene treatment. The injured soldiers were transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, with the two most severely injured individuals airlifted to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. Their current conditions are not immediately available.
The 11th Airborne Division expressed its grief and commitment to providing support to the families of the deceased and the injured soldiers. An investigation into the cause of the accident will be conducted by the Army, and due to the fatalities involved, the Army Combat Readiness Center in Alabama will also send an investigatory team. The names of the two deceased soldiers will be released 24 hours after their relatives have been notified.
This incident follows another tragic event earlier in the year when three soldiers were killed in April when two military helicopters collided while en route to Fort Wainwright near Fairbanks during a training mission.
