In a series of overnight raids in the West Bank, which is under Israeli occupation, more than 60 members of the militant organization Hamas were detained, including a prominent Hamas spokesman. These actions come as the West Bank increasingly feels the repercussions of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Hassan Yousef, a leading Palestinian political figure who previously served as the official Hamas spokesperson in the West Bank, was among those detained. He was taken into custody in his home in Beitunia, according to the Palestinian Prisoners Club, an NGO representing Palestinian detainees.

Hassan Yousef’s arrest is not his first encounter with Israeli forces. He has been arrested on multiple occasions and has spent a total of 24 years in Israeli jails, facing charges such as incitement, entering Jerusalem without permission, and belonging to Hamas.

Yousef has been a prominent figure and has made regular appearances in international media. This week, he conveyed his belief to the Canadian outlet The Globe and Mail that Hamas might be willing to release the estimated 200 hostages it currently holds if Israel agrees to a 24-hour ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have not yet commented on Hassan Yousef’s reported detention. However, the IDF confirmed that a broad counterterrorism operation took place overnight in the West Bank, with over 80 wanted suspects apprehended, including 63 identified as Hamas terror operatives.

Since the brutal attack by Hamas inside Israel on October 7, a total of 850 Palestinians have been detained in the West Bank, as reported by the Palestinian Prisoners Club. This includes lawmakers, prominent figures, journalists, and former detainees who have previously served extended terms in Israeli jails.

Mustafa Barghouti, the General Secretary of the Palestinian National Initiative, stated that there is an extensive Israeli operation to arrest Palestinians. He expressed concern over the growing number of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, which now stands at approximately 6,300. Many of these detainees have not been formally charged or taken to court, and Barghouti emphasized the lack of due legal process, including the detention of over 200 children.

The escalation of the conflict in Gaza has led to increased violence in the West Bank. The Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Health reported that a number of Palestinians were shot dead in clashes with Israeli forces on Thursday, with a confirmed death toll of six people, which is expected to rise. Clashes between Palestinians and Israeli troops have occurred at various locations in the West Bank.

The Palestinian Red Crescent noted difficulties in reaching injured individuals, with ambulances reportedly being detained by Israeli occupying forces. These developments underscore the gravity of the situation and the challenges faced by Palestinian residents in the West Bank.

The West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967 following the Six-Day War, is regarded by many as a territory that holds significance in the aspirations of Palestinians for a future state. However, it has been subject to the construction of Israeli settlements, considered illegal under international law by most of the world. This situation has raised concerns and contributed to the ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.

Israel’s perspective regards the West Bank as a disputed territory, with a contention that its settlement policy is legal. The complex dynamics in the region and the ongoing conflict further highlight the need for a comprehensive and peaceful resolution to the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
