As the world prepares to bid farewell to 2023, Germany and France are bolstering security measures ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations, citing heightened terrorism threats stemming from the Israel-Hamas conflict. Both nations are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of citizens during the festivities.
Germany on High Alert
In Germany, concerns about potential terror attacks have led to increased police presence in major cities. The city of Cologne, renowned for its New Year’s celebrations, is reportedly under a specific threat, prompting authorities to reinforce security around its iconic cathedral.
Police in Cologne are deploying additional forces, including officers equipped with submachine guns and protective vests, amid reports of potential attacks by Islamist groups. The city’s gothic cathedral has taken precautionary measures, limiting access to church services only until further notice due to the current security situation.
The move comes after last year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations in Berlin turned into violent riots, with deliberate fireworks attacks causing injuries to several individuals, including police officers and firefighters.
Berlin authorities are using social media channels to raise awareness about the dangers of fireworks, releasing a video message urging citizens to avoid attacking emergency personnel.
France Faces “Very High Terrorist Threat”
Meanwhile, France is gearing up for New Year’s Eve with heightened security measures in response to what French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin described as a “very high terrorist threat.” Approximately 90,000 officers will be deployed across the country to ensure public safety during celebrations.
Darmanin emphasized the need for a robust mobilization of police and gendarmes due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has contributed to global security concerns.
In addition to terrorism threats, France traditionally experiences an uptick in minor offenses, such as burning cars, during New Year’s Eve celebrations. However, the French Interior Ministry reported a decrease in the number of cars burned compared to the previous year.
The increased security measures in Germany and France follow similar precautions taken by several European countries ahead of Christmas Eve. Earlier in December, German and Dutch authorities arrested four alleged Hamas members suspected of plotting terror attacks on European soil.
As the clock ticks down to midnight, both nations remain vigilant, acknowledging the potential risks associated with the current global security climate and taking proactive steps to ensure a safe and secure New Year’s Eve for all citizens.
