Davos, Switzerland – The World Economic Forum’s annual meeting enters its second day with a focus on pressing global challenges, shifting the discourse toward environmental and climate concerns. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres continues to emphasize the need for united action against global warming following a record-hot year in 2023.

Key discussions will address sustainability in the Middle East and North Africa, tackling plastic waste, and exploring strategies to preserve biodiversity amidst growing threats.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, after a series of meetings, is scheduled for a broadcast conversation with New York Times columnist Tom Friedman. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian will engage in a discussion with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria.

Tuesday saw U.S. forces conducting a strike against Iran-backed rebels, the Houthis, in Yemen, responding to their recent missile attacks on vessels in the Red Sea. This military action followed an earlier missile strike on a U.S. vessel on the same day.

In the afternoon session, French President Emmanuel Macron, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and Argentina’s new president, Javier Milei, described as an “anarcho-capitalist,” will address the forum. U.N. Secretary-General Guterres will deliver a morning address.

During Tuesday’s events, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy engaged with CEOs, financiers, and political leaders, urging more Western support amid Russia’s prolonged military campaign in Ukraine. Zelenskyy called for strengthening Ukraine’s economy to enhance security, emphasizing the need for continued assistance from allies.

The Davos meeting continues to provide a platform for global leaders to address critical issues and foster collaboration on a range of pressing concerns.
