Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken a proactive stance in response to the surge in migrant border crossings at the southern border of Texas. In an announcement on Thursday, Governor DeSantis revealed his decision to deploy members of the Florida National Guard to “assist” Texas Governor Greg Abbott in addressing what has been declared an invasion.

Governor DeSantis expressed his commitment to supporting Texas in its efforts to curb the influx of migrants across the border. The deployment includes both the Florida National Guard and members of the Florida State Guard, with up to 1,000 National Guard members offered based on the specific needs identified by Texas.

In a statement, Governor DeSantis defended the move, asserting, “States have every right to defend their sovereignty, and we are pleased to increase our support to Texas as the Lone Star State works to stop the invasion across the border.” He emphasized the importance of reinforcing barriers, including the installation of razor wire, to secure the nation’s borders, stating, “We don’t have a country if we don’t have a border.”

Governor Abbott of Texas has intensified his characterization of the situation as an invasion, particularly in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling allowing U.S. Border Patrol agents to remove razor wire installed by Texas law enforcement. DeSantis, along with several other Republican governors, has rallied behind Abbott, expressing their full support for the measures taken to address the border crisis.

This is not the first time Florida has dispatched its forces to assist in border security efforts. Governor DeSantis made a similar announcement last year, declaring the deployment of troops and personnel from state agencies to Texas to “defending” the border. The administration highlighted that Florida has consistently provided direct law enforcement and military assistance to Texas since 2021.

The move by Governor DeSantis underscores the collaborative efforts among states to address the challenges posed by the border situation. As the southern border remains a focal point of national attention, the deployment of Florida National Guard members aims to contribute to the collective measures aimed at securing the integrity of the nation’s borders.
