In a recent exclusive interview with Al Arabiya English’s Riz Khan, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg delved into critical international matters, with a particular focus on the Israel-Palestine conflict and Austria’s foreign relations. The discussion touched upon Austria’s temporary suspension of funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), broader European perspectives on the conflict, Austria’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and global security concerns.

Austria’s Stance on UNRWA Funding: Schallenberg clarified Austria’s decision to temporarily suspend funding to UNRWA, emphasizing that it was a measure pending investigations into allegations of involvement by some UNRWA representatives in attacks against Israel. Stressing the importance of the UN’s impartiality, he highlighted the need for thorough investigations to maintain trust in the Middle East, especially following serious allegations related to attacks in October.

While UNRWA funding was temporarily halted, Schallenberg underlined Austria’s commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza by increasing overall humanitarian aid. Collaborating with organizations like the Red Cross and the World Food Programme, Austria aims to contribute significantly to alleviating the ongoing challenges in the region.

European Stance on Israel-Palestine Conflict: Discussing the broader implications for European countries, Schallenberg highlighted the delicate balance between supporting free speech and preventing incitement to violence. He noted the sensitivity surrounding certain slogans and reaffirmed Austria’s commitment to a two-state solution as the most viable path to peace in the region.

“The two-state solution and normalization are the only game in town,” said the Austrian Foreign Minister. “We have to find urgently a political process which can lead to Palestinians and Israelis living in security and peace side by side.”

Austria’s Neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine Conflict: The conversation shifted to Austria’s neutrality, particularly in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Schallenberg reiterated Austria’s condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of respecting international law. He distinguished the situations in Ukraine and the Israel-Palestine conflict, citing different dynamics and geopolitical tensions.

Addressing Austria’s dependence on Russian gas, Schallenberg acknowledged the criticism but highlighted Austria’s efforts to become independent of Russian energy by 2027. He emphasized Austria’s commitment to renewable energy despite challenges faced by landlocked countries in diversifying energy sources.

Global Security Concerns: Towards the end of the interview, Schallenberg expressed concerns about global security, specifically highlighting the threat of nuclear conflict and the rise of autonomous weapons systems. He underscored Austria’s active role in international efforts to address these challenges and contribute to building a safer world.

Balancing Global Crises: Schallenberg shared his apprehensions about the world’s ability to focus on multiple crises simultaneously. He cautioned against being consumed by one crisis to the neglect of others, emphasizing the importance of global vigilance in addressing various security threats.

As Austria navigates complex international issues, Schallenberg’s insights shed light on the country’s diplomatic stance and commitment to fostering stability in an ever-evolving global landscape.
