In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Nikki Haley, the remaining challenger to Donald Trump in the GOP presidential primary, confirmed that she has requested Secret Service protection due to new threats against her. This decision follows two weeks of intense criticism from Trump and his supporters.

Haley, standing as the sole candidate after the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 23, has faced heightened vitriol from Trump, who has resorted to name-calling and promoting false conspiracies about her. Despite the attacks, Haley has refused to concede the nomination and is focusing on the upcoming GOP primary in her home state of South Carolina on Feb. 24.

The rhetoric escalated as Trump derisively referred to Haley as “birdbrain,” spread false birther conspiracies, and threatened to cut off her donors from the MAGA world. Additionally, online influencers with ties to the Trump campaign have posted misogynistic and highly sexualized content about Haley on social media.

“We’ve had multiple issues,” Haley told the WSJ. “It’s not going to stop me from doing what I need to do.”

While neither Haley nor her campaign disclosed specific details about the “issues,” recent incidents include two swatting attempts and a woman rushing the stage at a Haley event in South Carolina. Haley has relied on a private security detail for protection, and there has been a noticeable increase in security presence at her events.

Despite stepping up her rhetorical attacks on Trump, Haley has faced a different level of vitriol that extends beyond traditional campaign mudslinging. The current threats and attacks trigger concerns about personal safety, prompting the request for Secret Service protection.
