Salekhard, Russia – In a shocking turn of events, Lyudmila Navalnaya, the mother of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, is alleging that Russian authorities are coercing her into holding a secret burial for her son. Navalny’s death has sparked controversy, with conflicting reports on the circumstances surrounding his demise.

Navalnaya visited the morgue in the Arctic city of Salekhard on Thursday, where she finally saw her son’s body and signed the death certificate. According to Navalny’s press secretary, a medical report presented to Navalnaya indicated that he died of natural causes. However, Navalny’s family vehemently disputes this, asserting that he was killed by Russian authorities.

In a video statement from Salekhard, Navalnaya claimed that investigators permitted her to see her son’s body but were pressuring her to hold a secret burial, which she is vehemently resisting. She accused authorities of blackmailing her by dictating the terms of the burial, including the location, time, and manner of the ceremony.

“They want to take me to the outskirts of the cemetery to a fresh grave and say: ‘Here lies your son,'” Navalnaya stated, expressing her refusal to comply with such conditions. She alleged that investigators warned her, stating, “Time is not on your side, the corpse is decomposing.”

Navalnaya, who traveled to Salekhard after learning about her son’s death in a nearby penal colony, has filed a lawsuit contesting officials’ refusal to release Alexei Navalny’s body. A closed-door hearing on the matter has been scheduled for March 4.

Navalny, Russia’s most prominent opposition politician, died suddenly in an Arctic prison last week. The circumstances surrounding his death have raised international concern, with accusations of foul play and a lack of transparency from Russian authorities.

In a separate development, US President Joe Biden met with Navalny’s widow Yulia, and his daughter Dasha Navalnaya in San Francisco. The White House issued a statement, noting that President Biden expressed admiration for Alexei Navalny’s courage and his legacy of fighting against corruption for a free and democratic Russia.

The controversy surrounding Navalny’s death continues to deepen, with his family demanding transparency and justice amid growing international scrutiny.
