Beirut (AP) In a dramatic turn of events, Lebanese soldiers captured a gunman on Wednesday following an attempted attack on the U.S. Embassy near Beirut. The incident unfolded amidst the backdrop of heightened tensions and ongoing conflict in the region.

The Lebanese military reported that the assailant, identified only as a Syrian national, was shot and subsequently taken to a hospital. The shooter’s motives remain unclear, though images circulating in Lebanese media depict the attacker wearing a black vest with “Islamic State” written in Arabic, along with the initials “I” and “S” in English.

According to a Lebanese security official, who requested anonymity, the attack involved four assailants. One individual drove the attackers to the embassy, while three others opened fire. A fierce gunfight ensued for nearly half an hour outside the U.S. diplomatic mission in Aukar, a suburb north of Beirut.

The security official confirmed that one shooter was killed, another escaped, and the third, who was wounded, was detained by Lebanese forces.

The U.S. Embassy issued a statement confirming that the morning attack at the entrance did not result in any casualties among their staff. They praised the swift mobilization of Lebanese troops and embassy security personnel in neutralizing the threat.

The attempted attack on the U.S. Embassy occurs at a time of significant turmoil in Lebanon. The country has been grappling with severe political deadlock and economic hardships. Additionally, the region has witnessed intense fighting between Hezbollah militants and Israeli troops along the border, leading to the displacement of thousands.

As investigations continue, the Lebanese military remains vigilant in addressing potential security threats. The capture of the gunman underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Lebanon in maintaining stability amid a complex and volatile environment. The swift action by both Lebanese soldiers and U.S. Embassy security has prevented what could have been a far more devastating incident.
