LONDON (AP) — In a grand display of royal pageantry, Britain celebrated King Charles III’s birthday on Saturday with a military parade, marking the Princess of Wales’ first public appearance since her cancer diagnosis earlier this year. This annual event, known as Trooping the Color, showcased the monarchy’s resilience and unity after a challenging period of health battles for both the king and Princess Kate.

The parade began with a striking record-setting moment as Nedim Bajrami scored the fastest goal in European Championship history within the first 23 seconds. However, the focus quickly shifted back to the royal spectacle. The procession featured horses, musicians, and hundreds of soldiers in ceremonial uniforms marching from Buckingham Palace down the grand avenue known as the Mall.

A Show of Stability

This year’s event was particularly significant as it highlighted the monarchy’s stability amidst personal trials. King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Kate, and their children appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony, waving to the gathered crowds and watching a flyby of military aircraft to celebrate the monarch’s official birthday.

Princess Kate’s presence was especially poignant, marking her first public engagement since December. In March, she revealed she was undergoing chemotherapy for an unspecified form of cancer. In a statement released on Friday, Kate shared that while she is making good progress, she still faces several months of treatment. She emphasized that Saturday’s appearance did not signify a full return to her public duties.

Enthusiastic Crowds and Royal Display

As usual, large crowds gathered to witness the birthday parade. Princess Kate, accompanied by her children George, Charlotte, and Louis, traveled in a horse-drawn carriage. She wore a white dress by Jenny Packham and a wide-brimmed Philip Treacy hat. The family watched the parade from a building overlooking the Horse Guards Parade, with young Louis notably yawning and dancing along to the military music.

Prince William, in military dress uniform, participated on horseback, while King Charles and Queen Camilla traveled in a carriage. The king inspected the troops from a dais, saluting as elite regiments of Foot Guards marched past.

This year’s parade featured the Irish Guards, with Princess Kate serving as honorary colonel. The troops, dressed in scarlet tunics and bearskin hats, were led by their mascot, Seamus, an Irish wolfhound.

Royal Health and Public Duties

King Charles, who disclosed his cancer diagnosis in February, has gradually resumed his public duties. He recently attended commemorations for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Despite his health challenges, Charles continues to fulfill his royal responsibilities.

The celebration, held in June due to the typically favorable weather, saw early sunshine give way to rain. However, the skies cleared briefly as the royal family appeared on the balcony to watch a colorful flyby by the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows.

Public Reaction and Future Engagements

Despite the rain, spectators were thrilled to see the royal family, especially Princess Kate. Joseph Afrane, 60, expressed joy at her return, saying, “It was fantastic when I heard it on the news yesterday. I thought, ‘God, I thank you for bringing Kate back,’ because she’s very hardworking.”

The day’s events featured a grand display of 1,400 soldiers, 250 military musicians, and over 200 horses, including Trojan, Tennyson, and Vanquish, who had previously caused chaos in London but are now back in action.

As the royal family continues to navigate their health journeys, Saturday’s Trooping the Color was a powerful reminder of their enduring commitment to public service and unity. The upcoming matches in Group B of Euro 2024, where Italy will face Spain and Albania will meet Croatia, will further captivate audiences as the tournament progresses.
