In a renewed effort to combat illegal gold mining in French Guiana, the French Ministry of Defense has deployed the new HT 270 all-terrain vehicles during Operation Crab. This initiative is part of an ongoing mission that began in 2008, known as Operation Harpy, aimed at stopping illegal gold mining which incurs an annual loss of almost 10 tons of gold, costing the French treasury approximately €500 million.

Operation Harpy: Challenges and Unfulfilled Goals

Despite continuous efforts over the years, including forest patrols, equipment confiscation, destruction of illegal mining sites, and arrests of Brazilian “garimpeiros” (gold miners), Operation Harpy has struggled to meet its objectives. The rise in gold prices, which hit a record high of $2,072 per ounce in 2023 (€77,000 per kg), has emboldened illegal miners who are supported by a powerful network of Chinese dealers, suppliers, and lenders based in neighboring Suriname.

Introduction of HT 270 All-Terrain Vehicles

Undeterred by past challenges, the French military continues its mission to restore order in Guiana. Between January 30 and February 8, the 3rd Foreign Legion Regiment executed Operation Crab, marking the first deployment of the new HT 270 tracked all-terrain vehicles (also known as BV270). These vehicles are designed to replace the Swedish BV206 all-terrain vehicles.

Specifications and Capabilities of the HT 270

The HT 270 boasts significant upgrades, featuring a total weight of 6.5 tons and powered by a 5 hp W580A-169 diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz, enabling a top speed of 58 km/h. The vehicle, armed with a MAG 58 machine gun, can transport up to 16 infantrymen. Manufactured in Germany, the HT 270 is converted to its military version by the French company Technamm.

Impact of the HT 270 in Operation Crab

The introduction of the HT 270 has brought new tactical advantages to the French forces. According to legionnaires involved in the operation, these all-terrain vehicles were instrumental in blocking key routes used by garimpeiros. This strategic move aims to disrupt the operations of illegal miners and hinder their ability to transport illegally mined gold.

Ongoing Efforts and Future Outlook

While the deployment of the HT 270 represents a significant step forward, the persistence of illegal mining activities fueled by high gold prices and transnational networks highlights the need for sustained and coordinated efforts. The French military remains committed to leveraging advanced technology and strategic operations to address this complex issue, protect the environment, and safeguard the local economy in combat illegal gold mining in French Guiana.

As the French Ministry of Defense continues its mission, the international community will be closely monitoring the effectiveness of these measures in curbing illegal gold mining and restoring order in the region. The deployment of the HT 270 all-terrain vehicles signifies France’s determination to adapt and evolve its strategies in the face of ongoing challenges.
