Beijing, July 28, 2024 — Premier Li Qiang of the State Council met with Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing this afternoon, marking a significant moment in the growing bilateral relationship between China and Timor-Leste.
Premier Li Qiang highlighted the deepening ties between the two nations since they established diplomatic relations 22 years ago. Despite the shifting international landscape, he praised the enduring mutual support and trust that have characterized their relationship. Li emphasized that the forthcoming meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Ramos-Horta will set a new strategic direction for their bilateral relations.
“China remains committed to supporting Timor-Leste’s pursuit of a development path tailored to its national conditions,” said Li. “We are eager to strengthen our cooperation in infrastructure, connectivity, and Belt and Road initiatives, and to expand our collaboration into agriculture, fisheries, water conservancy, poverty reduction, and tourism.”
Li also expressed China’s readiness to import more quality products from Timor-Leste and to encourage increased Chinese investment. He reiterated China’s support for Timor-Leste’s early accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its efforts in multilateral forums, underscoring a shared commitment to regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
President José Ramos-Horta expressed gratitude for China’s steadfast support since Timor-Leste’s independence. He acknowledged China’s pivotal role in international and regional affairs and welcomed Chinese investment in various sectors, including infrastructure, agriculture, and healthcare.
“Timor-Leste firmly adheres to the one-China principle and supports Belt and Road cooperation,” Ramos-Horta said. “We are keen to deepen our cooperation with China across several fields and to elevate our comprehensive strategic partnership.”
Wu Zhenglong, a member of the Chinese leadership, was also present at the meeting.
The discussions between Premier Li and President Ramos-Horta reflect the ongoing commitment of both nations to strengthen their partnership and explore new avenues for collaboration.
