Kyiv, August 4, 2024 — In a momentous address marking the 20th anniversary of Ukraine’s Air Force, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the arrival of the first F-16 fighter jets in Ukraine and celebrated the resilience and bravery of the nation’s airmen.
During the awarding ceremony held on Air Force Day, Zelenskyy lauded the Air Force’s steadfast defense against Russian aggression, despite significant challenges and limited resources. The ceremony featured a dramatic video showcasing the newly arrived F-16s, underscoring a new chapter in Ukraine’s aerial capabilities.
A New Era for Ukraine’s Air Force
“Today, we honor the strength and skill of our people, thanks to whom the skies of Ukraine remain Ukrainian,” Zelenskyy stated. He praised the Air Force for preventing Russian forces from achieving air dominance over Ukraine. “The Russian occupier was very hopeful of destroying our Ukrainian aviation and air defense — our ability to defend our state. But Ukrainians did not let that happen. And this is true heroism.”
The arrival of the F-16s, Zelenskyy noted, marks a pivotal advancement in Ukraine’s military aviation. He highlighted the extensive diplomatic efforts involved, citing the numerous meetings and negotiations required to secure the jets. “We have often heard the word ‘impossible’ in response, but we have made possible what was our ambition, our defense need, and now it is a reality, a reality in our skies. F-16s are in Ukraine. We made it happen.”
Gratitude to International Partners
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the nations that played crucial roles in making this delivery possible. He specifically thanked Denmark and the Netherlands for initially agreeing to provide the jets, and the United States for supplying the necessary missiles and bombs. “Thank you, Denmark, the Netherlands, the United States, and all our partners — we appreciate your support!” Zelenskyy said.
Ongoing Challenges and Future Goals
Despite the significant achievement of receiving the F-16s, Zelenskyy acknowledged ongoing challenges, including a previous lack of training slots for Ukrainian pilots, which had delayed the delivery. Ben Hodges, a former commander of American forces in Europe, referred to this issue as a “policy decision by the administration” but emphasized that the delay was overcome.
Looking forward, Zelenskyy called for further support from international allies, particularly in allowing “truly long-range strikes” on Russian airfields. He praised recent Ukrainian drone attacks, stressing the importance of targeting Russian bases that launch strikes against Ukrainian positions.
A Proud Moment for Ukraine
The arrival of the F-16s represents a significant boost to Ukraine’s Air Force capabilities and a testament to the nation’s perseverance and strategic partnerships. As the Air Force Day celebrations continue, the Ukrainian military and its allies reflect on a key milestone in the ongoing conflict and look forward to the enhanced defense capabilities that the new fighter jets will bring.
