Ukrainian forces have dealt a significant blow to a unit of Chechen fighters loyal to Ramzan Kadyrov, capturing dozens of combatants deep within Russian territory, according to reports from the Ukrainian project Deep State. The captured fighters were members of the Chechen ‘Akhmat’ unit, which had reportedly attempted to flee rather than face capture.
The Ukrainian 225th Separate Assault Brigade is credited with the successful operation against the Akhmat unit. “The boys carried out a series of measures that ensured the operation’s tactical success,” Deep State highlighted in their report.
The ‘I Want to Live’ project has released footage showing numerous captives, some of whom identified themselves as members of the Akhmat unit. The video reveals that these fighters were apprehended in the rear of the Russian defensive lines and did not resist capture. The project notes that these soldiers attempted to flee rather than engage despite Kadyrov’s assertions that Akhmat fighters do not surrender.
The situation in the Kursk region has reportedly developed rapidly, with Kadyrov’s public relations campaigns and the tendency to shield his fighters from frontline combat contributing to their vulnerability. The report criticizes Kadyrov’s strategy, suggesting that the lack of frontline engagement left only conscripts and border guards to defend against the Ukrainian advance. “These forces wisely chose to surrender, preserving their lives rather than fighting to the death,” the channel remarked.
In related developments, Ukrainian forces have reportedly advanced 30 kilometers into Russian territory, with a continuous flow of armored personnel carriers and tanks moving towards Kursk. AFP reports that thousands of Ukrainian troops are involved in the operation within the Kursk region.
The significant capture of Chechen fighters and the ongoing Ukrainian advance underscore the escalating intensity of the conflict, highlighting the effectiveness of Ukraine’s military strategy and the challenges facing Russian forces in the region.
