Jerusalem — The Israeli military launched a significant operation in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, intensifying the already volatile situation in the region amid the ongoing war in Gaza. The operation, which Israeli authorities describe as targeting Hamas militants, resulted in the deaths of at least 10 Palestinians and involved extensive gun battles, arrests, and airstrikes.

Israeli forces entered Jenin and two refugee camps in the West Bank as part of the operation. The military stated that its actions were necessary to combat terrorism. Israel Katz, Israel’s top diplomat, emphasized the gravity of the situation, calling it “a war in every respect,” and stressed the importance of victory. Katz also advocated for the “temporary evacuation of Palestinian residents,” signaling a potential escalation in military tactics.

Escalating Tensions in the West Bank

The West Bank, already a site of unrest, has seen increasing violence since the outbreak of the Gaza war. Over 650 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since October 7, according to figures from the Palestinian Health Ministry. During the same period, at least 30 Israelis have died in attacks in Jerusalem and the West Bank, illustrating the growing dangers in the area.

The Israeli government has accused Iran of smuggling weapons into the West Bank and of encouraging the ongoing conflict. However, Wednesday’s military operation also follows recent warnings from senior Israeli officials, including Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, about the rising threat posed by extremist Israeli settlers. They have criticized far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir for allegedly emboldening militant settlers, which they say exacerbates tensions and threatens Israel’s security.

Linkages Between Gaza and the West Bank

While the military operation in the West Bank might seem like an expansion of the Gaza conflict, experts argue that the two fronts are intrinsically connected. Sofia Meranto, a Middle East analyst with Eurasia Group, noted that “there are linkages between Gaza and the West Bank and what happens in those two areas and other fronts in the region (and vice versa).”

Meranto warned of a potential escalation in the West Bank, driven by the deteriorating security situation and increasing violence, coupled with worsening economic conditions for Palestinian communities. The rising instability in the West Bank could further complicate efforts to manage the broader regional conflict, with significant implications for both Israeli and Palestinian populations.

Calls for Uprising

In response to the Israeli operation, Hamas has called on Palestinians in the West Bank to “rise,” further inflaming tensions. The militant group, which governs Gaza, has a significant influence in the West Bank, and its call to arms could lead to further clashes and casualties.

The situation remains fluid, with the potential for further violence in the West Bank posing a serious challenge to regional stability. As Israel continues its military operations and as Palestinian groups respond, the international community watches closely, concerned about the possibility of a broader conflict enveloping the region.
