Washington, D.C. — A new Reuters-Ipsos poll reveals that Vice President Kamala Harris is leading former President Donald Trump by 4% in the upcoming U.S. presidential election. The poll, released on Thursday, August 29, shows Harris with 45% of the vote compared to Trump’s 41% among registered American voters.
This marks a significant increase in support for Harris, who had only a 1% lead over Trump in a similar poll conducted in June. The surge in Harris’s numbers comes in the wake of President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the Democratic nomination race on July 22, where he urged party members to rally behind Harris. Biden’s decision appears to have energized Democratic voters, particularly after criticism mounted over his performance in the July 1 debate and concerns about his age, now 81, grew among the electorate.
The poll indicates that Harris’s support is particularly strong among women and Hispanic voters, with 49% of respondents from these groups backing her, compared to 36% for Trump. This 13% gap shows a notable increase from July polls, where Harris led Trump by 9% among women and 6% among Hispanics.
In addition to the Reuters-Ipsos findings, a Wall Street Journal report on August 30 highlighted growing support for Democrats among young American women, further bolstering Harris’s position as the Democratic frontrunner.
With the November election approaching, these figures suggest a tightening race as Harris and Trump vie for the presidency in a politically charged environment.
