In a significant move to modernize its military aviation capabilities, the Iraqi Ministry of Defence has signed a contract to purchase 12 H225M helicopters from Airbus. The new fleet will replace Iraq’s aging Russian-made Mi-17 aircraft, bolstering the Iraqi Army Aviation’s operational capacity across various mission types, including counter-terrorism, special operations, troop transport, and medical evacuations.

Iraqi Minister of Defence Thabet al-Abbassi signed the agreement in Baghdad, with French Ambassador Patrick Durel in attendance. Airbus Helicopters CEO Bruno Even expressed his enthusiasm, stating: “We are very pleased to welcome a new member in the H225M family. The H225M is a combat-proven platform used worldwide, and we are confident it will contribute significantly to Iraq’s safety and sovereignty.”

The H225M, part of Airbus’ Super Puma family, is known for its versatility, durability, and performance under harsh conditions. It is currently in service with several military operators globally, including the French Air Force, and has a proven track record in combat search and rescue missions. With the capacity to carry up to 28 troops or serve as a cargo, medical evacuation, or combat support aircraft, the H225M offers unmatched range and payload capabilities.

Powered by Makila 2A1 engines, the H225M excels in extreme conditions, including high-altitude and night operations, thanks to its advanced avionics, auto-pilot systems, and cutting-edge sensors. Its defensive armor, external fuel tanks, and high adaptability to combat roles ensure its ability to perform long-range missions in demanding environments.

This acquisition is expected to enhance Iraq’s defense capabilities significantly, enabling the country to conduct more advanced and diverse military operations while ensuring greater national security and sovereignty.
